THE Mc CARRICK  Y-DNA PROJECT.

To day we have about 1000 Mc Carrick families throughout the world. Where did they all originate, are they related?

Quoting from official records…

The Hearth Money Rolls for Co Sligo dated 1664 to 1666 lists a total of three Mc Carrick homesteads for the County. One Templehouse, one Grange and one Cloonbaniff.

Griffith’s Valuation of Ireland 1848 to 1864 lists a total of 34 Mc Carrick homesteads for Co Sligo. 3 Mc Carrick homesteads just across the Sligo borders in Co Mayo and one Mc Carrick homestead at Convoy, Co Donegal.

Did all Mc Carrick’s come from one common ancestor?. It’s time to find out!  First a brief paragraph on Genetics.

We know that a woman has two X-chromosomes.  A man has an Y and an X chromosome. Every man gets his Y chromosome from his father. His mother has no Y chromosome to pass on.  The Y or male chromosome is passed down unchanged from father to son in the male chain over hundreds of years. The Y chromosome follows the male surname. When ‘markers’ on the Y chromosome of two men are compared the degree of difference is an indication of how long ago they shared a common ancestor. Differences that do occur are called ‘Mutations’ and happen about every 500 generations.

As Secretary of the Mc Carrick Clan (Ireland) Committee I carried out research and found many organisations that engage in D N A testing. After consideration and examination of independent recommendations I selected Family Tree D N A, Houston. Texas. U S A.  I contacted that organisation and received a prompt reply from Bennett Greenspan who has set my name up as the Mc Carrick Project Manager.

The D N A tests are based on saliva samples from participants.     We can register for a 12 or a 25-participant project. Family Tree D N A recommends establishing the Project with the 12 marker

Y chromosome test. The cost for this group is $99 + postage per participant. When participants match in the 12-marker test, the test can then be upgraded to 25 markers for an additional fee of $90. The objective of the 25-marker test is to reduce the time frame of the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) between the matching participants.    (FTDNA will supply sterilised kits)

For more information on Y-D N A testing please visit www.familytreedna.com

My task now is to encourage participation. One participant from each root Mc Carrick family is sufficient and may be sponsored by family branches. To enrol you must be a member of the Mc Carrick Clan, subscription $10 yearly per family to Treasurer Chanel Mc Carrick. 13 Adelaide Square, Whitefriar Street Dublin 8. Ireland. Many Clan families have already paid the membership subscription.

How to enter Project.
